June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month in the city

The Boaz City Council voted to rezone property on Doris Street at its May 26 meeting after a public hearing produced no opposition.
The property, located in the area behind Mount Vernon Homes, was zoned R-4 (multi-family residential district) and is now R-2 (medium density detached residential district). The change will allow the purchaser of the property to split the property for construction of single-family dwellings.
The mayor and council also signed a proclamation declaring June Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month in Boaz and encouraged people to “Paint the Town” purple to raise awareness. Malinda Moore, an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Association, spoke to the council about the effort to educate people about Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia — using purple clothing, decorated doors, windows and businesses to start conversations.
Moore said Boaz will host its second Boaz Volunteer Walk to End Alzheimer’s at 8 a.m. Aug. 15, at Snead State Community College. The walk will raise money for the East Central Alabama Walk in Jacksonville, and all money raised will go to benefit the cars, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Last year, she said, out of the $28,000 raised by the Jacksonville walk, $11,000 came from Boaz.
For Moore, the passion to support Alzheimer’s assistance and research is personal. Her mother was diagnosed with forms of dementia and she witnessed the devastating impact the disease had. She speculated that almost everyone has someone in their family affected by Alzheimer’s or other kinds of dementia.
People can register for the Boaz City Walk at the East Central Alabama Walk website, or by scanning a QR code. Donations can be made online by scanning the code also.
Mayor Tim Walker announced the city will have fireworks July 3 in the area of the old outlet center. He said the city is working with the Boaz Area Chamber of Commerce, and there’s a possibility of additional festivities for the day before the 4th of July.
In other action, the council:
Adopted a resolution to add Assistant City Clerk Jennifer Green as an authorized official to execute financial documents on behalf of the city of Boaz.
Adopted a resolution to purchase a Dell Pro Slim QCS1250 and Dell Pro 34 Plus USA-C Hub monitor for the city’s new Ordinance Enforcement Officer Dwight Thrasher for a total cost of $1,742.68.
Reappointed Jeff Owens and Leigh Landers to the Boaz Library Board for terms expiring May 10, 2030.
Reappointed Ruth-Ellen Thompson to the Boaz Library Board for a term expiring May 10, 2029.
Reappointed Laura Wilson to the Downtown Design Committee with a term expiring Sept. 13, 2030.
Approved the accounts payable voucher from May 7-15, totaling $835,869.89.
The next Boaz Council meeting will be 6 p.m. Monday.
