Marshall County voters will choose their next school superintendent next week.
The race is on the Republican runoff ballot, featuring incumbent Cindy Saye Wigley against challenger Clay Webber. The race has been marked by accusations by supporters of both candidates for the past year.
Webber is the principal of Asbury High School. He was the leading vote-getter in the May 19 primary with about 47% of the 7,163 votes cast.
Wigley, of Douglas, is a former Career and Technical Education director and principal seeking her fourth term as superintendent. She pulled 36% of the vote in the primary.
Stephanie Wisener, who finished third in the primary last month, has endorsed Webber.
There is no Democratic candidate.
There is also a runoff for an at-large seat on the county school board between Brandon Evans and incumbent Bill Hancock. The winner will face Democrat Jeffrey Watson in the Nov. 3 general election. Evans had 46% of the vote and Hancock 42% in the primary.
Only voters outside the city limits of Albertville, Arab, Boaz and Guntersville can vote in the county school system races.
The only other local race on Tuesday’s ballot is for Marshall County revenue commissioner. Incumbent Michael Johnson is seeking reelection and facing challenger Cody Nugent, who is the current coroner. Johnson had 40% and Nugent 31.3% in the primary.
Republican voters also face several choices Tuesday:
• Lieutenant governor: Former state Republican Party chairman John Wahl faces Secretary of State Wes Allen.
• U.S. senator: U.S. Rep. Barry Moore of Enterprise takes on Jared Hudson, a former Navy SEAL.
• Attorney general: Former state Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell opposes Assistant Attorney General Katherine Robertson.
• Commissioner of agriculture and industries: Douglas Mayor Corey Hill faces Christina Woerner McInnis. Hill pulled two-thirds of the vote in his home county last month and led the field with 35.2% compared to 34.9% for McInnis.
• Public Service Commission, Place No. 2: Former state Auditor Jim “Zig” Zeigler faces incumbent Chris Beeker.
Democratic voters in Marshall County only have one race on their ballot, for the nominee for U.S. Senate. Dakarai Larriett opposes Everett Wess.
