Guntersville High School was well represented during the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s All-Star Week as rising senior Karson Teague and head golf coach John Doyle played key roles in the North’s 48.5-41.5 victory over the South in the North-South All-Star Golf Match on Monday, July 20, at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery.
Teague earned his spot on the prestigious North squad after being nominated by Coach Doyle and selected by the AHSAA. Doyle was also recognized for his outstanding work in high school golf, receiving a nomination from previous Guntersville High School Athletic Director Shannon Cahill before being selected by the AHSAA to serve as the North’s head coach.
The North team featured nine of the state’s top high school golfers, including Teague, Hensen McCrary (Scottsboro), Colton Frederick (Deshler), Payton Pannell (Susan Moore), Drew Rice (Sumiton), Jackson Robbins (Westbrook Christian), Adam Russell (Spain Park), Aidan Thigpen (Florence) and Jonah Turner (Hewitt-Trussville).
Competing against the South’s top players, the North squad delivered an impressive performance to claim the 48.5 to 41.5 team victory, highlighting the exceptional talent showcased during AHSAA All-Star Week.
Russell earned MVP honors for the North team. He won 12 out of the 18 possible points in his match. He played a phenomenal round and carded several birdies including three in a row on holes 15-17.
For both Teague and Doyle, the opportunity to represent Guntersville and North Alabama was one they will long remember.

“It was an amazing experience for both of us,” Doyle said. “Karson represented Guntersville High School with great character and sportsmanship throughout the event, and I couldn’t be more proud of the way he competed alongside some of the best golfers in Alabama.”
Doyle also expressed his appreciation to the AHSAA for organizing one of the state’s premier high school athletic events.
“We are extremely thankful to the AHSAA for providing such a first-class experience for these outstanding student-athletes,” Doyle said. “The All-Star Week is a great way to recognize the accomplishments of Alabama’s best seniors while allowing them to build friendships with players from across the state.”
The girls competition was highlighted by the South winning four of the five individual match play duals but a dominant 17-1 win by Ella Roberts of Brookwood and Anna Perdue of Northside enabled the North to squeak by the South by one stroke — 45.5 to 44.5. Both girls earned MVP honors for the North.
