HUNTSVILLE — In a special Thursday night game, the Albertville Aggies traveled to Huntsville to take on the Mae Jemison Jaguars in a Class 5A, Region 8 matchup. The Aggies would come up short in their attempt to invade Louis Crews Stadium as the Jaguars pulled off a 21-9 victory over the Aggies.
The win was a big one for Mae Jemison as they stay in the race in Region 8 as they improved to 3-1 while also improving to 3-3 overall.
The Aggies continue to search for their first region win as they fell to 2-4 overall and 0-4 in region play.
The matchup between the Aggies and the Jaguars would see Albertville on offense first. Albertville’s first offensive possession would be a quick one as two short runs and an incomplete pass would force the Aggies to punt.
On Mae Jemison’s first offensive drive, the Jaguars would kick off their drive with two first down plays which was supported by two penalties on Albertville. The Aggies were quick to fix their mistakes as they forced Mae Jemison into a fourth down situation. Albertville would shut down a pass attempt on fourth down to force a turnover on downs by the Jaguars.
The Aggie’s next drive would see much improvement as quarterback Jude Fann would toss a first down pass to Gabriel Cruz. After three short runs by Albertville, the Aggies decided to go for a 33-yard field goal which they would connect on. Albertville would lead 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Mae Jemison would claim the lead to kick off the second quarter as quarterback Xaiver Teague would have a long run for a touchdown. The PAT would be no good by the Jaguars.
The next two Albertville drives would be capped off by fumble recoveries by Mae Jemison. The Jaguars would capitalize on one of those turnovers for a score to make it a 14-3 halftime lead for Mae Jemison.
To open up the second half, the Aggie defense would force one of their own fumbles as Fischer Sweatt would recover a Jaguar fumble to put the ball back in the Aggie’s hands.
Despite the turnover, Albertville would struggle to move the ball as they tossed three straight incomplete passes. The Aggies would be forced to punt on fourth down.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Aggie’s defense would make the biggest play of the night to open up the fourth quarter as Bentley Cooper would recover a fumble for a touchdown to make it a 14-9 score.
The following Jaguar drive would again be stopped by Albertville’s defense as Jaceny Demosthene would recover a fumble.
Albertville’s next drive would start with promise as Eguensley Cerant would rush twice for nine yards. On third down, a fumble by Albertville would be recovered by the Mae Jemison defense.
The Jaguars would put the game away with 1:03 remaining in the game as Teague would rush in for a touchdown. Mae Jemison would go on to win the region matchup 21-9 over the Aggies.
The Aggies will look to win their first region matchup next week as they host Lee-Huntsville.
