Both DeKalb schools cruise in openers of Class 3A playoffs

After a thrilling first round of the state playoffs, just two area teams remain in the hunt for a spot among the Super Seven.
On Friday, the Geraldine Bulldogs and the Fyffe Red Devils will each take on top-10 opponents in a pair of Class 3A heavyweight clashes.
No. 4 Geraldine Bulldogs (10-1)
vs. No. 10 Westbrook Christian Warriors (10-1)
Class 3A, North Bracket
7 p.m. Friday, Coolidge-Isbell Field, Geraldine
Geraldine rolls into the second round following a 59-27 win over Rogers in last week’s opener. The Bulldogs’ only loss this fall came against 5A Boaz, 20-0. They have outscored foes 471-168 and are a perfect 6-0 at home this season.
Westbrook Christian advanced with a 49-0 shutout of Vinemont. The Warriors’ only loss was a Week 4 defeat to No. 2 Piedmont, 40-27. They have outscored opponents 492-121 and are 4-1 on the road.
Geraldine leads the all-time series 6-4, including a 30-7 victory last season. This will be the first playoff meeting between the programs.
No. 7 Fyffe Red Devils (8-2) at No. 2 Piedmont Bulldogs (11-0)
Class 3A, North Bracket

Fyffe heads to the second round after a 34-7 win over Lauderdale County at home. The Red Devils’ two losses came in Week 0 against Class 1A No. 2 Maplesville and in Week 9 at No. 4 Geraldine, 17-6. They have outscored opponents 429-170 and are 3-2 on the road this year.
Piedmont punched its ticket with a 59-19 victory over Phil Campbell. The Bulldogs own a dominant scoring margin of 559-106 and have recorded four shutouts.
Fyffe holds a 3-1 lead in the all-time series, though Piedmont claimed last season’s third-round matchup, 30-28. The Red Devils last defeated Piedmont in the 2020 3A semifinals, 14-6.
