GUNTERSVILLE — The Marshall County Republican Club hosted U.S. senator and gubernatorial hopeful Tommy Tuberville at a campaign event last Thursday.
State Rep. Brock Colvin, R-Albertville, introduced Tuberville and encouraged everyone to vote Republican in the upcoming election on Nov. 3.
“The choice you have Nov. 3 — it’s as simple as this: common sense versus communism,” Colvin said. “That’s the base of what we’re saying. That’s the fight that we have on Nov. 3. So when you go to vote on Nov. 3, I encourage you, from the top of the ticket all the way down to the bottom, please vote Republican.”
Tuberville then recounted his accomplishments in Washington and outlined plans to help Alabama grow and prosper should he win the governor’s race against Democrat Doug Jones.
“We did some good things in Washington, D.C. We did some good things for our veterans. We helped our healthcare. But most of it’s just been in the last year and a half under President Trump,” Tuberville said.
“We couldn’t do anything the first four years under Joe Biden, other than just spend money, spend money. We just kept throwing money out the door. We spent $7 trillion that we should have never spent.”
Tuberville commented briefly on ending the war in Iran and lowering fuel and grocery prices, while emphasizing the importance of law enforcement, education and manufacturing.
“We have to have a safe state, because when I’m out there, recruiting, which is going to be my number one job, getting manufacturing jobs in the state, I want to be able to look them in the eyes and say we got energy, we got water, we got transportation, we got education, and when you come here, your families are going to really love it.”
Beyond lowering taxes and rooting out waste and fraud, Tuberville said early workforce training was key to boosting manufacturing and Alabama’s economy.
“We have 20% of the kids in the state that go to four-year schools. You have 80% that don’t. We got to teach those 80%, if they’re going to get into the workforce, how to use their hands. We have gotten away from that,” he said.
“I saw Marshall County Tech school out here today. They do an outstanding job, and that’s how we’re going to mirror our community colleges and the other entities that are not four-year universities. We’re going to get into teaching our young kids how to use their hands, but we’re not going to wait till they get out of school. You’ve got to start them early.”
Tuberville also said recruiting industries to rural areas would help revive local economies and also save many rural hospitals on the brink of closure.
He ended his speech by endorsing Douglas Mayor Corey Hill for Alabama commissioner of agriculture and industries against Democratic candidate Ron Sparks and echoed Colvin’s plea for everyone to vote Republican on Nov. 3.
“We’re not gonna give up. We’re not gonna give our state up to these people that absolutely believe in something that this country wasn’t built on, because that would be what would happen if we would lose this race. It really would,” Tuberville said.
