Local cities get in the action for celebrating US’ 250th birthday
By DONNA THORNTON, Editor
On the 250th anniversary of the United States declaring its independence, the annual celebrations seem to hold a little more significance.
But in any year, nothing says the Fourth of July like fireworks, and a number of local celebrations this year will be lighting the sky on and around this Fourth of July.
The tradition of fireworks goes back about as far as the Declaration of Independence the day commemorates.
According to History.com, as delegates from 12 colonies voted on July 2 in favor of independence (soon to be followed by the 13th) John Adams wrote to his wife on July 3, saying, “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival…It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”
As it turned out, he was off by a couple of days because of some minor editing to the Declaration, but he was correct about the celebration.
On July 4, 1777, the Pennsylvania Evening Post reported the festivities: “The evening was closed with the ringing of bells, and at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with 13 rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.”
Here are some of the local opportunities to celebrate, most with beautiful illuminations planned.
