‘John Boy’ Rodman charged with 2 felony counts in Marshall
STAFF REPORTS
A vehicle reported stolen last week sparked an investigation that included multiple law enforcement agencies in two states and landed an Albertville man in jail, according to Marshall County Sheriff Phil Sims.
Jonathan “John Boy” Rodman, 34, faces charges of first-degree theft and breaking and entering into a vehicle in Marshall County, and other charges in other jurisdictions.
Deputies responded to a reported vehicle theft in the early morning hours Sept. 29 at a residence on Breedwell Road. The owners said they were awakened at about 3 a.m. when they heard their truck start up. They checked exterior cameras and saw the truck pulling out of their driveway.
At about 6:30 the same morning, deputies were called to a residence on Pea Ridge Road, where the homeowners had walked out to discover car doors open and signs that someone had rummaged through the car. The deputy and homeowner looked at the homeowner’s surveillance cameras and saw a man with face covering walking around the property.
Later that morning, another property owner in the area found the same man walking around their property but found nothing had been disturbed.
Deputies and investigators were able to identify the man as Rodman. Sims said Rodman was had been identified as a suspect in theft cases investigated by Scottsboro and Guntersville police, and he was known to law enforcement agencies throughout Marshall County.
Investigators went to the suspect’s home, but he fled on foot into a wooded area. Sheriff’s deputies and investigators, with members of several other law enforcement agencies, searched the area but didn’t find Rodman.
The investigation revealed Rodman was a suspect in the theft of dump truck stolen in Marion County, Tennessee, Sims said. Sheriff’s investigators found the stolen dump truck in a field in the Poplar Springs community Sept. 30.
The next day, Investigator Jordan Elliott got a tip on the stolen Ford truck and found it off the side of the roadway on Pea Ridge Road. Later that afternoon, Rodman was found passed out in a vehicle in DeKalb County, the sheriff said. He initially was jailed in DeKalb County on charges there but was booked into the Marshall County Jail on Thursday on the auto theft charge. He remained in the jail over the weekend on $30,000 bond.
Rodman also faces pending felony charges in multiple other jurisdictions, according to Sims.
In Marshall County, Rodman faces a Class B felony (first-degree theft), punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a Class C felony (unlawful breaking and entering an automobile) punishable by one to 10 years in prison.
