No. 1 Bears show why in 41-25 win over Pirates

RAINSVILLE — In a father-son matchup, it was the Plainview Bears and head coach Dale Pruitt who got the last laugh over the Boaz Pirates and head coach Luke Pruitt. Plainview, the number one ranked team in Class 3A, got the better of the Pirates in the 41-25 win on Friday night following a big performance by Plainview running back Kylen Johnson who produced four total touchdowns and 332 total offensive yards.
The scoring would start with Plainview striking first with Johnson putting the first six points on the board with a long 66-yard rushing touchdown to give the Bears a 7-0 lead at the end of one quarter.
To start the second quarter, the Pirates would have a good offensive possession that would end with a made field goal attempt by kicker Andrew Pena to cut Plainview’s lead to 7-3.
The Bears would answer right back with an eight play drive that finished off with a Janzen Currie 1-yard rushing touchdown to put Plainview back in front 14-3.
The Pirates would rely again on their special teams as Pena would kick in a 24-yard field goal to make it a 14-6 lead.
With seconds remaining on the clock for the first half, Johnson would score a long 67-yard touchdown to expand the Plainview lead to 21-6 at halftime.
After a slow start to the third quarter for both squads, Boaz would strike first with running back Dayton Porter rushing in a touchdown from 1-yard out.
The Bears would answer right back with a 74-yard touchdown pass from Oliver Long to Currie to make it a 28-12 score.
To end the third quarter, Boaz would strike again on offense with quarterback Beau Bennett tossing a 8-yard pass to tight end Jaxxon Taylor to make it a 28-18 score.
To open the fourth quarter, the Bears offense scored again as Long would pass a 33-yard touchdown strike to Johnson.
The Pirates wouldn’t go away as Porter would score another rushing touchdown from 24-yards out to cut Plainview’s lead to 10 with six minutes remaining.
Plainview would close the door shut on Boaz with Long connecting with a deep 88-yard touchdown pass to Johnson to give Plainview the 41-25 win.
Leading the Bears offense was Johnson who finished with 332 total offensive yards. Long would complete nine of 12 passes for 242 yards and three touchdowns.
Boaz would be led by Porter who finished with 169 total yards and two touchdowns. Beau Bennett would complete 18 of 30 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown.
Plainview (2-0) will look to continue their winning ways as they host New Hope on Sept. 4 to open up Class 3A, Region 8 play.
Boaz (1-1) will look to rebound as they travel to face Douglas next week in Class 5A, Region 8 play. Kick off for both games is set for 7 p.m.
